High voltage LED driver power supply is about to become mainstream

Abstract: Low cost and high-efficiency LED lighting technology has always been the goal pursued by the industry. The reason why the high-power LED bead lighting market has captured everyone's appetite and attracted so much attention today is mainly due to the following three reasons:

Firstly, its market is large enough;

Secondly, by the end of this year or early next year, the first year of the LED high-power bead lighting market will arrive, which means that the proportion of LED bead lighting fixtures in the total lighting fixtures will exceed 10%;

Thirdly, unlike the market dominated by a few suppliers such as GE, PHILIPS, and OSRAM for incandescent, fluorescent, and energy-saving lamps, the LED lighting fixtures produced by these high-power lamp suppliers today only account for about 10% of the total lamp market. In other words, the LED high-power bead lighting market is not yet a monopoly market, and everyone still has opportunities.

However, most LED chip suppliers are facing the danger of being eliminated today, as the low-voltage LED chips they produce will become increasingly difficult to sell to high-power LED bead packaging manufacturers. Why? Due to the emergence of high-voltage LED chips, high-voltage LED chips have two significant competitive advantages compared to low-voltage LED chips:

Firstly, at the same output power, the driving current required for high-voltage LED chips is significantly lower than that for low-voltage LED chips. Taking CREE's high-voltage 4W LED bead XLampXM-LHVW as an example, its forward voltage drop is as high as 100V, which means it only needs a driving current of 40mA to output 4W power. However, a normal 1W LED bead with a forward voltage drop of 3V requires a driving current of 350mA to output 1W power. Therefore, the power dissipated by high-voltage LED beads with the same output power during operation is much lower than that of low-voltage LED beads, which means that the cost of the heat dissipation aluminum shell can be greatly reduced.

Secondly, high-voltage LEDs can significantly reduce the loss of AC-DC conversion efficiency. Taking an 8W output power as an example, if a 4W high-voltage LED bead with a forward voltage drop of 100V is used, the output end can adopt a 2-string configuration. The forward voltage drop of 2 series connected LEDs is 200V, which means that only 220V AC power from the mains can be rectified and reduced by 20V using bridge rectification. But if we use a 1W low-voltage LED with a forward voltage drop of 3.2V, even if 8 are connected in series, the forward voltage drop is less than 30V, which means we need to reduce the voltage from 220VAC mains to 30VDC. We know that the lower the input and output voltage difference, the higher the efficiency of AC to DC conversion. It can be seen that using high-voltage LEDs can greatly improve the efficiency of transformers, thereby significantly reducing power loss during AC-DC conversion. This reduction in heat consumption can further reduce the cost of the heat dissipation shell.

High voltage LED beads, along with their accompanying LED driver power supply, have the characteristic of high voltage and low current. Whether using isolated or non isolated driver power supplies, they both have high efficiency. Considering the characteristics of the lighting fixtures and system costs, a suitable type of power supply can be selected for the drive:

Firstly, by using a non isolated LED driver power supply, an efficiency of over 93% can be achieved for 8W products with the existing power supply solution, which is simple and cost-effective. However, due to the non isolated scheme, UL safety certification is difficult to pass. Although the cost of non isolated driving power supply has decreased, the safety insulation cost adopted for lighting fixtures that meet UL safety standards has increased, and the system cost has not decreased.

Secondly, after research, Yiguang Technology has developed a new type of isolated driving technology that can achieve maximum efficiencies of 92%, 93%, 93%, and 94% for 8W, 16W, 24W, and 36W high-voltage LED power supplies, respectively. This not only meets the high-efficiency driving requirements of high-voltage LED chips, but also meets the requirements of isolated driving, making it easy to pass UL safety certification. Simultaneously meeting high power factor of over 95% and low THD below 20%, meeting DLC standards.

Therefore, if high-voltage LED beads are used to develop LED universal lighting products, the overall power consumption can be greatly reduced, thereby significantly reducing the design requirements for heat dissipation shells. For example, we can use thinner and lighter aluminum shells to meet the heat dissipation needs of LED lighting fixtures. As the cost of heat dissipation aluminum shells is one of the main cost components of LED lighting fixtures, the effective reduction of aluminum shell costs also means the effective reduction of the overall cost of LED lighting fixtures.

From this, it can be seen that high-voltage LED beads can effectively reduce the cost and weight of LED lighting fixtures, but their more important significance is to significantly reduce the design requirements for the heat dissipation system, thus effectively clearing the biggest technical obstacle for LED lighting fixtures to enter the indoor lighting market. Therefore, high-voltage LED beads will dominate the future LED high-power bead lighting fixture market.
